Against the backdrop of the benchmark on-grid wind power tariff policy significantly raising on-grid tariffs, this paper investigates the spatial characteristics of the policy's environmental effects and the mechanisms underlying them. The results show that wind power installed capacity increases more in regions with abundant wind energy resources, yet the extent of environmental improvement in these regions is smaller than in neighboring regions with limited wind energy resources. This is mainly because regions with abundant wind energy resources have smaller economies and, in order to facilitate wind power consumption, transmit more electricity to neighboring regions with limited wind energy resources, thereby improving the latter's environment by displacing coal-fired power generation. The analysis demonstrates that the benchmark on-grid wind power tariff generates a spatial spillover effect on environmental improvement that is transmitted from regions with abundant wind energy resources to neighboring regions with limited wind energy resources.
