Leveraging positions in industrial-chain networks to foster innovation growth is an important pathway for enhancing scientific and technological innovation capacity under open-economy conditions and for leading high-quality economic development. Using data from the OECD Inter-Country Input-Output Tables for 2000–2020, this paper measures the CheiRank and PageRank centrality of the global industrial-chain network and investigates the effects and mechanisms of positions in this network on innovation by Chinese firms. The results show that centrality in the global industrial-chain network has a significant innovation-driving effect: both CheiRank-based supply-chain position and PageRank-based demand-chain position promote innovation by Chinese firms. Mechanism tests indicate that centrality in global industrial chains promotes firm innovation through closed-triangle transmission effects, market-power expansion effects, and international technology-capture effects. Moreover, the positive effect of positions in the global industrial-chain network on firm innovation is stronger when the topological distance between industrial-chain nodes is shorter and transmission efficiency is higher. From a complex-network perspective, this paper provides new theoretical insights and empirical evidence for promoting the great circulation of industrial chains and achieving high-level self-reliance and strength in science and technology.
